What Are Import Duty and Taxes?

Before using the estimator, it helps to understand what these charges actually are.

Import duties are charges imposed by customs authorities based on the value of the goods being imported. This includes the cost of the item, shipping fees, and insurance. Duties are external charges – like a toll paid to bring goods into a country.

Taxes, such as Value-Added Tax (VAT) or Goods and Services Tax (GST), are applied by the government to the total value of the shipment, including the goods, shipping costs, and any import duties. Taxes are internal payments used to fund public services.

Depending on your shipping method, these charges are handled differently:

Shipping Term
Who Pays
When
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid)
Sender pays upfront
At booking
DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid)
Receiver pays upon delivery
When parcel arrives
