What Is a Harmonized System Code?

harmonized system code is a standardized 6-digit number used to classify goods in international trade. The system is developed and maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO).

The harmonized system code ensures that customs authorities in different countries classify the same product in the same way. This consistency speeds up clearance and reduces errors.

Why the Harmonized System Code Matters for Your Business

Reason #1: Determines Customs Duties and Taxes

Your harmonized system code directly affects how much duty your customer pays. Different codes have different duty rates.

Scenario
Consequence
Correct code
Proper duty amount assessed
Incorrect code
May overpay or underpay duties
Misclassification (intentional)
Fines up to 100% of shipment value

Reason #2: Avoids Customs Delays

Incorrect harmonized system code classification causes 30% of customs delays. Customs officers flag mismatched codes for manual review – adding days or weeks to delivery.

Reason #3: Ensures Regulatory Compliance

Certain products require special permits, licenses, or certificates. The harmonized system code tells customs which regulations apply to your shipment.

Reason #4: Qualifies for Trade Agreements

Free trade agreements offer reduced or zero duties for specific products – but only if you use the correct harmonized system code .
